Bitcoin’s institutional demand picture sharpened in Q3 2026 as US spot ETFs accumulated 79,800 BTC worth roughly $6.2 billion, nearly twice the 41,300 BTC in newly mined supply, according to 21Shares’ Q3 Bitcoin Market Report. The inflows marked a hard reversal from Q2’s $4.8 billion net outflows. However, the bid was highly concentrated: August 17–27 and September 21–25 accounted for 91% of the quarter’s bitcoin-denominated ETF inflows.
Corporate treasury buying faded as ETFs returned. Public bitcoin treasury companies cut combined purchases from $7.1 billion in Q2 to roughly $1 billion in Q3. Strategy added only 1,700 BTC worth about $240 million and disclosed $349 million in sales during July and August. Combined ETF and public treasury buying reached about $7.2 billion, equivalent to 2.4 times the value of newly mined supply, up from 0.8 times in Q2.
The demand did not absorb all seller flow. Glassnode estimated long-term holders reduced balances by 248,000 BTC valued at about $17.4 billion, nearly three times the amount US spot ETFs acquired. This followed accumulation of roughly $31 billion from November 2025 to June 2026. In Q3, Bitcoin rose 42.7% to close September at $83,570, and Glassnode recorded $9.3 billion in net realized gains, the first quarterly net gain of 2026.
Meanwhile, US Treasury cash dynamics could either support or strain funding conditions. The Treasury’s Q1 2027 borrowing estimate of $800 billion includes a $150 billion rebuild of the Treasury General Account. With the TGA at $1,016 billion on October 28 and a year-end target of $850 billion, roughly $166 billion may still leave the account. Because the overnight reverse repo facility holds only $176 million and reserve-management purchases are currently zero, a bill-heavy rebuild could pull on repo financing and bank reserves. Still, the squeeze case may be overstated: the drawdown equals less than 6% of bank reserves, and SOFR held between 3.93% and 3.95% in late October.
Crypto-specific confirmation will come from several consecutive weeks of net inflows into US spot Bitcoin ETFs during the year-end TGA drawdown. Without those inflows, supportive funding conditions may benefit other assets rather than Bitcoin. The next key dates are the Treasury refunding announcement on November 4 and the New York Fed’s monthly purchase schedule around November 13.
