Bitcoin enters a pivotal stretch as two major forces converge: a steep decline in CME futures open interest to three-year lows and a sharp post-U.S. midterm election rebound that has traders focused on whether BTC can reclaim the $80,000 level.
Before the election, Bitcoin was hovering around the $65,000 mark, a pivotal battleground for buyers and sellers. CME open interest plunged sharply, while perpetual leverage increased, a combination that often precedes heightened volatility. K33 Research highlighted the contraction in futures positioning, noting that traders were bracing for a potentially significant price move as U.S. midterms approached.
Following the midterm elections, BTC staged a V-shaped recovery. It briefly slipped below $76,000 before rebounding toward $78,000, a move of at least 2.6% from the local low. The speed of the bounce showed dip-buying interest, but analysts caution that it is not yet confirmed whether the move was driven by fresh demand or short covering.
The hourly 200-period exponential moving average remains a key technical hurdle. A confirmed reclaim and retest of that indicator could give buyers short-term control, while the four-hour moving-average resistance zone has already rejected the latest recovery attempt. The path to $80,000 would require another gain of roughly 2.56% from the $78,000 area, but buyers would first need to reclaim the hourly 200 EMA, break the four-hour resistance, and ideally hold above the daily EMA structure with stronger volume.
Broader institutional demand and risk appetite will also play a role. Until those confirmations appear, the recovery may remain a temporary bounce within a fragile technical structure rather than the beginning of a larger trend shift.
