As U.S. midterm election polls were set to close, prediction market platforms showed traders increasingly confident that Democrats would take control of both chambers of Congress, a development with potentially significant consequences for digital asset regulation.
On Polymarket, users gave Democrats a 76% chance of securing the Senate and a 94% chance of winning the House. Kalshi displayed similar odds: 94% for the House and 75% for the Senate. All 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats were up for election.
The surge in political prediction market attention follows the sector's breakout during the 2024 presidential election, when platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi became alternative indicators of voter sentiment and achieved multibillion-dollar valuations. However, Bloomberg reported Tuesday that political trading has cooled sharply — politics accounted for just 1% of trading volume on both platforms in October, down from more than 60% during the 2024 election cycle.
A Democratic-controlled Congress could reshape oversight of the crypto industry. Democratic figures such as Senator Elizabeth Warren and former Senator Sherrod Brown could lead key committees, shifting the agenda toward stricter scrutiny of digital assets and away from crypto legislation. The shift could also intensify oversight of President Donald Trump's family-linked crypto venture, World Liberty Financial, and potential conflicts of interest.
In Ohio, a closely watched race for crypto policy, Kalshi bettors priced Sherrod Brown at 71% to defeat incumbent Jon Husted. Elsewhere, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey held a 98% chance on Kalshi. For exchanges, token issuers, and investors, the main question is whether a new Congress prioritizes clear stablecoin and market structure rules, stricter supervision, or a mix of both.
