The crypto market suffered one of its most violent deleveraging episodes in recent sessions, with total liquidations surpassing $1.25 billion in a 24-hour window. According to data from CoinGlass, 239,733 traders were liquidated, and long positions represented 88.6% of the total losses, indicating that heavily leveraged upside bets were caught off guard by the sell-off.
Bitcoin was the hardest-hit asset, recording approximately $331 million in forced liquidations. Ethereum followed with $213 million, meaning the two largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization accounted for a substantial share of the wipeout.
Despite the scale of the event, analysts caution that the flush may not be over. Rising Bitcoin-denominated open interest and subdued spot demand are contributing to concerns that another wave of forced selling could materialize. The decline in open interest alongside the liquidation surge suggests leverage is being reset, but the same data points also show that speculative positioning remains elevated enough to trigger further cascades if prices continue to weaken.
The market's immediate question is whether forced selling is nearing exhaustion or if this episode is a precursor to deeper downside pressure.
