US Government Confirms Bitcoin Holdings at 28,988 BTC, 85% Below Prior Estimates

The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) officially disclosed holding 28,988 Bitcoins (worth approximately $3.4 billion) as of July 2025, following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by independent journalist L0la L33tz. This figure, compiled by the USMS Asset Forfeiture Division, drastically revises previous market assumptions of 200,000 BTC in government reserves.

The FOIA response, dated July 15, 2025, revealed partially censored documents detailing holdings current as of March 24, 2025. Historically, the USMS liquidated seized assets like Silk Road Bitcoins through public auctions, causing short-term market volatility. However, the agency confirmed no immediate liquidation plans for the current holdings, signaling a strategic shift toward retention.

This adjustment alleviates long-standing fears of large-scale government sell-offs, with the revised holdings representing just 0.14% of Bitcoin's total supply. Market analysts suggest the transparency could bolster investor confidence in Bitcoin's price stability.
