The World Liberty Financial (WLFI) token, linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump and his family, began trading on major exchanges including Binance, OKX, and Bybit on September 1, 2025. Early trading activity briefly valued the Trump family's holdings at over $5 billion on paper, making cryptocurrency the largest component of Trump's wealth, surpassing his real estate and media assets.
According to financial disclosures, Donald Trump held 15.75 billion WLFI tokens at the end of 2024, which translated to approximately $3.6 billion at the opening day's price. However, trading was highly volatile, with the token sliding from a high of over $0.46 to around $0.24 by September 2, a decline of more than 47%.
Blockchain analysis revealed that insiders dumped 698 million WLFI tokens worth hundreds of millions of dollars on the first day of trading. Early investors, who had purchased tokens at prices between $0.015 and $0.05, locked in returns of up to 20x, while retail buyers absorbed losses. Major exchanges received substantial inflows: Binance over 400 million tokens, OKX about 180 million, and Gate.io around 118 million.
The token's distribution structure allocated 30% to founders, with DT Marks DEFI LLC—a Trump-linked entity—receiving 22.5 billion tokens (22.5% of total supply) and entitled to 75% of net protocol revenues. Other allocations included 33.893% for token sales, 32.6% for community growth, and 3.5% for team members and advisors.
Beyond WLFI, Trump-related crypto ventures include the TRUMP memecoin, which reached a market value above $14.5 billion in January 2025, Melania Trump's failed MELANIA token, NFT trading cards, and the USD1 stablecoin, which has grown to a $2.7 billion market cap and was used in a $2 billion deal with Abu Dhabi's state fund.
The launch has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers and watchdog groups. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Maxine Waters called WLFI an "unprecedented conflict of interest" in a letter to the SEC, while the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations opened a review into both WLFI and the TRUMP memecoin.
