U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday has dismissed former President Donald Trump's $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and Penguin Random House. The lawsuit, filed on September 16, 2025, accused the Times and its journalists Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig of publishing defamatory articles and the book Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father's Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success.

Judge Merryday criticized the 85-page complaint as "decidedly improper and impermissible" under Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, noting its excessive length, political rhetoric, and irrelevant content including extended praise of Trump's business career and attacks on "legacy media." The judge stated, "A complaint is not a megaphone for public relations or a podium for a passionate oration at a political rally."

The dismissal triggered immediate selling pressure on the TRUMP meme coin, with the token dropping 3.1% in 24 hours to trade at $8.43. TRUMP remains 88.5% below its all-time high of $73.43 and has been in a prolonged downtrend since mid-July. Technical analysis shows the token testing key resistance near $8.80-$9.00, with critical support between $8.00 and $8.20.

Trump's legal team has 28 days to amend and refile a shorter version not exceeding 40 pages. The New York Times dismissed the claims as meritless, stating the lawsuit sought to stifle independent reporting.
