Ethereum 'OG' Whale Exits with $274M Profit as Institutional Ownership Rises

An early Ethereum investor, often referred to as an 'OG' whale, has completed a multi-year liquidation strategy by selling their entire remaining stash of 26,000 ETH, worth approximately $80.88 million, on the Bitstamp exchange. According to data from Lookonchain and Arkham Intelligence, this final transaction marks the end of a legendary holding period that began as early as 2017.

The whale had accumulated a total of 154,076 ETH at an average entry price of just $517, holding steadfast through major market downturns including the 2018 crash and the 2022 collapse following the FTX debacle. The systematic selling, which began in October 2025, has culminated in a realized profit of roughly $274 million, representing a staggering 344% return on the initial capital.

The timing of this exit is notable, coinciding with a period of institutional uncertainty highlighted by recent Spot Ethereum ETF outflows of $93.8 million. The $81 million wave of sell-side liquidity from this whale could apply short-term downward pressure on ETH's price, which was trading around $3,150 at the time of the news.

However, the market appears to be absorbing this selling pressure without significant structural damage. Data indicates that while this individual whale exits, a new class of institutional buyers is stepping in. Firms like BitMine Immersion Technologies have been accumulating ETH, now controlling more than 3.43% of the total supply. Unlike speculative traders, these institutions are likely staking their holdings, locking up supply for the long term to earn yield and support the network.

This shift in ownership dynamics occurs against the backdrop of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's recent philosophical push. Buterin has advocated for Ethereum to focus on scaling bandwidth and data efficiency rather than pure transaction speed, envisioning a 'sovereign web' that protects user autonomy from corporate dominance.
