Status, one of Ethereum's longest-running open-source projects, has re-emerged with a major multi-pronged launch. The project, founded in 2017, has unveiled a unified privacy super-app, the world's first natively gasless Layer 2 blockchain called Status Network, and a satirical sci-fi animated web series titled USS Status.
The overhauled Status app is a unified platform for mobile and desktop that combines a secure multi-chain crypto wallet with swap functionality, an end-to-end encrypted messenger, a privacy-preserving web browser, and censorship-resistant Community spaces. It utilizes Logos' peer-to-peer messaging technology and decentralized smart contracts to provide what the team calls "unrivaled privacy."
The core technological advancement is the launch of Status Network, an Ethereum L2 built on the zkEVM Linea stack. Its defining feature is the elimination of gas fees through a reputation-based Karma system funded by native yield and app fees. This system enables gasless private accounts. The network is designed to redistribute 100% of net revenues to its community, funding liquidity incentives, a public funding pool, and SNT token buy-backs. The mainnet launch is scheduled for Q1 2026, with pre-deposit vaults for staking already open.
To mark this renewal, Status has launched USS Status, a satirical cartoon series available on X, YouTube, and TikTok. The series follows a crew of "meme misfits" and pokes fun at the chaotic history of the crypto industry. Volodymy Hulchenko, Status App Lead, stated the project aims to reclaim crypto's "sense of fun and freedom" and the "cypherpunk spirit" while building tools that defend privacy and digital freedom.
