The roadmap covers private keys, transaction signatures, and consensus security. Hoskinson also pointed to U.S. FIPS 203–206 standards, which define approved quantum-resistant algorithms, as a guide for Cardano’s upgrades, potentially bolstering institutional adoption.

The project plans to coordinate these changes through its decentralized governance system. A quantum strategy is currently being voted on, and a formal research proposal is due next week. Hoskinson explained that Cardano’s existing annual hard fork schedule makes it easier to implement such migrations. He suggested the network could follow a model similar to Bitcoin’s BIP-361, which proposes a five-year transition from old addresses to quantum-safe ones. “It is very easy to facilitate that migration path. It’s just a hard fork that we implement every year,” he said.

Hoskinson framed quantum preparedness as a critical test for blockchain governance, comparing the threat to an asteroid that would require global cooperation—even among rival nations—to mitigate.
