Hayes explained that a typical protocol generates real revenue from trading fees, lending spreads, or validator rewards, but none of it flows to those holding the token. The token exists purely as a vehicle for early backers to exit. “You do not give any of the economic value you created at the protocol level back to the token holders,” he stated. This structural flaw creates a predictable cycle: the token lists at maximum hype and minimum sell pressure, then each subsequent day adds more unlocks, VC distributions, and team vesting with no buy-side support—leading to a slow-motion collapse.
The problem is compounded by venture capital dynamics. VC funds have fiduciary duties to their own limited partners and must sell into any liquidity after lockups end. Hayes has recommended revenue sharing and token buybacks to many projects he advises, but the advice is consistently blocked. “The VC on the cap table doesn’t want the model to work that way,” he said, because large funds need tokens to vest on schedule for distribution, not to channel value back to holders.
As a counterexample, Hayes pointed to Hyperliquid, which launched without a large VC round and committed 97% of its revenues to buying back HYPE tokens from the open market. The buyback mechanism runs automatically from trading fee income, creating structural demand that offsets selling pressure. This design ties protocol success directly to token price, attracting holders who care about long-term health rather than pure speculation.
Hayes believes crypto investors have matured after nearly a decade of ICOs, IEOs, and low-float TGEs. They now care about cash flows to token holders, not just narratives. The market is increasingly favoring projects with clear value-sharing models, though regulatory uncertainty and resistance from established VCs slow the shift. The message is clear: protocols that ignore revenue distribution risk irrelevance as capital flows to those that treat token holders like partners, not exit liquidity.
