Zcash (ZEC) has received a clean bill of health from an artificial intelligence-powered security audit, just weeks after the protocol neutralized a critical vulnerability in its Orchard shielded transaction framework.
The audit, announced by Zcash co-founder Bryce Wilcox-O’Hearn on June 13, 2026, was conducted using Anthropic’s latest AI model, Claude Mythos, at the request of Zcash development organization Shielded Labs. It focused on high-severity and critical bugs, and according to the results, no vulnerabilities were found.
This news follows a tense period for the privacy coin. In late May 2026, researcher Taylor Hornby, funded by Shielded Labs, discovered a theoretical flaw in the ecc::chip::mul component of Orchard. The under-constrained circuit could have allowed an attacker to forge cryptographic proofs and create counterfeit coins in the shielded pool. Crucially, no exploitation was detected on the live network, and no funds were lost.
The Zcash ecosystem responded with a meticulously timed fix. An emergency soft fork on June 2 temporarily restricted Orchard operations, and the NU6.2 network upgrade deployed on June 3 fully replaced the vulnerable components, restoring shielded transaction functionality without disruption. Hornby’s discovery was aided by an AI model—Claude Opus 4.8—showcasing how advanced reasoning systems can accelerate defensive security research.
Despite the flawless fix, market panic ensued. ZEC’s price fell sharply as investors grappled with the difficulty of verifying whether any illicit coins had ever been minted inside Zcash’s privacy-preserving environment. Institutional moves, including a widely followed portfolio adjustment by BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes, added to the selling pressure.
The subsequent clean audit by Claude Mythos aims to close that chapter. Wilcox-O’Hearn’s announcement marks the first public verification that the protocol’s current codebase carries no critical bugs, offering a degree of reassurance that earlier remediation succeeded.
To further cement trust, the Zcash community has fast-tracked Ironwood, an upgrade scheduled for late July 2026. It will migrate coins to a new shielded pool via a turnstile mechanism designed to prove the integrity of the monetary supply retroactively and continuously, reinforcing the 21 million coin cap.
The sequence of events—discovery, swift patching, a clean seal from advanced AI, and a proactive transparency upgrade—positions Zcash as a case study in modern blockchain security practices. While absolute guarantees remain elusive, the combination of human expertise and AI-assisted auditing is rapidly setting a new benchmark for privacy-focused networks.
