In a move widely anticipated by markets, the U.S. Federal Reserve voted to leave the benchmark interest rate unchanged at its latest meeting, opting for a cautious stance as it monitors inflation and economic growth. The decision immediately rippled through financial markets, sending gold prices surging to near $4,100 per ounce—a level not seen in weeks—and sparking speculation that risk assets, including Bitcoin, could be next to benefit.
The Fed's vote was 9-to-3 in favor of holding the federal funds rate at 3.5%–3.75%, with three policymakers dissenting in favor of a quarter-point hike. Chair Kevin Warsh's comments were interpreted as less hawkish than feared, causing a sharp decline in bets on a September rate increase. According to CME FedWatch, the probability of a hike next month fell from about 81% to 63% immediately after the announcement.
Gold, which struggles when real yields rise because it offers no interest, surged as much as 2% on Wednesday. By Thursday, spot gold was trading at $4,076.29, while August futures firmed near $4,073.60. The rebound from recent lows underscored the metal's sensitivity to shifting rate expectations and reinforced its role as a safe haven.
For the cryptocurrency market, the Fed's pivot could prove equally significant. Bitcoin, often dubbed "digital gold," has historically tracked macro trends, particularly real yields and dollar strength. A lower-for-longer rate environment reduces the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets, making both gold and Bitcoin more attractive. With the dollar index softening and bond yields retreating, analysts see a potential catalyst for a Bitcoin push above key resistance levels.
The focus now turns to the June Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, due Thursday. A softer reading would cement expectations of a prolonged pause and could further boost crypto prices. Conversely, an upside surprise might revive tightening fears, strengthening the dollar and weighing on both gold and Bitcoin.
TD Securities warned that gold's rally could be vulnerable if energy prices rekindle inflation, but the World Gold Council sees a path to $4,500 under a scenario of weaker growth and lower rates. Bitcoin proponents argue that the leading cryptocurrency could mirror any sustained gold rally, especially as institutional adoption continues to rise.
In the broader crypto landscape, Ethereum and other major altcoins often benefit from the same liquidity-driven tailwinds. As markets digest the Fed's message, traders are positioning for a potential re-acceleration in the digital asset space, viewing the decision as a green light for risk-taking.
