South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has laid out a multi-year roadmap toward an initial public offering (IPO), setting 2028 as the target year for its public market debut. The plan includes a preliminary listing review in 2027 as a critical first checkpoint, with internal preparations scheduled for completion throughout 2026.
The exchange, one of the largest in the country, said the IPO is part of a broader effort to strengthen transparency, governance, and market trust. As part of the pre-IPO overhaul, Bithumb is upgrading its internal controls, risk management systems, and compliance infrastructure to align with institutional finance standards. The company is also transitioning to Korean International Financial Reporting Standards (K-IFRS), a move designed to ensure clearer financial reporting and robust public-market disclosures.
Bithumb emphasized that the listing schedule could be adjusted based on market conditions and regulatory timelines. The company stated it is pacing the process deliberately, avoiding a rushed approach. The 2027 preliminary review is seen not as a definitive filing but as an early gatekeeping step that frames the listing as a forward-looking objective.
The IPO ambitions come after a notable operational setback in February, when a crediting error on the platform mistakenly allocated 620,000 BTC to users instead of 620,000 Korean won. The incident caused a sharp 17% price drop for Bitcoin on Bithumb's markets, highlighting the importance of the exchange's control upgrades. The company has since restructured its business and strengthened operational resilience.
South Korea's crypto regulatory environment has been tightening, with lawmakers and financial authorities scrutinizing exchange transparency, customer asset protection, and compliance with anti-money laundering rules. A successful IPO would subject Bithumb to continuous public-market reporting and investor-protection requirements, potentially raising the bar for the entire sector.
Interest in Bithumb's listing has already attracted corporate attention; reports suggest that securities firm Kiwoom Securities sought a stake in the exchange in anticipation of the IPO. This underscores how the listing plan is reshaping the company's corporate dynamics well before any formal filing.
The key milestones are now clearly defined: internal control upgrades and K-IFRS adoption in 2026, the preliminary listing review in 2027, and the final IPO target in 2028. Whether Bithumb stays on track will depend on evolving market conditions and the pace of regulatory reviews.
