Dogecoin surged more than 14% on September 21, 2026, but this time the move was not driven by an Elon Musk post or a single Dogecoin-specific announcement. DOGE climbed from an intraday low of $0.08536 to a high of $0.09784, later trading around $0.0957, with 24-hour volume reaching approximately $1.84 billion. The rally accelerated during a market-wide short squeeze that liquidated about $795 million in leveraged crypto positions, the overwhelming majority of them bearish bets.
Bitcoin was the initial driver, rising from around $81,000 to more than $86,000 and reaching its highest level since January. CoinGlass data showed roughly $667.7 million of the liquidations involved shorts, compared with $127.3 million in liquidated longs. More than 119,000 traders were affected, and the largest single liquidation reported at the time was an approximately $11.3 million BTC-USDT position on Binance.
Dogecoin amplified the broader move, as higher-beta crypto assets often do during sharp risk-on sessions. DOGE showed its own derivatives build-up: futures open interest increased about 15%, and four large addresses opened long positions totaling 78.2 million DOGE worth roughly $5.59 million. Long-to-short account ratios on Binance and OKX rose to 2.30 and 2.65 respectively.
Several Dogecoin-specific catalysts also appeared around the same period. Whale accumulation reports indicated large holders purchased more than 240 million DOGE during the previous week, with some social media posts claiming over 360 million DOGE bought in 24 hours. Meanwhile, MyDoge confirmed that beta testing for its V3 wallet had ended, with final adjustments underway before release to mobile app stores. The wallet upgrade is expected to include multichain swaps, cross-chain bridges, decentralized finance tools, Web3 games, AI-powered features, and token tracking linked to market and social data.
Speculation also returned around the DOGE 1 lunar mission, a CubeSat project by Geometric Energy Corporation that booked a SpaceX rideshare launch and paid for the contract entirely in Dogecoin. The satellite is intended to travel toward lunar orbit with cameras and sensors, but no official launch confirmation or detailed manifest had been published. Traders are watching whether DOGE can hold the psychologically important $0.10 level after clearing its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages.
