Key takeaways:

  • Bybit's EMI licence deepens EU crypto integration, potentially attracting higher institutional trading volumes.
  • Integrated fiat rails on Bybit.eu could lift liquidity for euro-denominated altcoin pairs.
  • Regulatory expansion may intensify competition, benefiting traders through improved platform services and tighter spreads.

Bybit.eu announced that Bybit Payments GmbH has been granted an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licence by Austria’s Financial Market Authority (FMA). This licence will support regulated e-money and payment services on the Bybit.eu platform, complementing the crypto-asset services already provided by Bybit EU GmbH.

Bybit EU GmbH has been authorised under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) since May 2025, offering custody, exchange, placing, and transfer of crypto-assets across the European Economic Area (except Malta). The new EMI licence allows Bybit Payments GmbH to build payment capabilities such as person-to-person payments, e-money services, Strong Customer Authentication, open-banking functionality, merchant solutions, and future card initiatives.

The two entities maintain distinct regulatory permissions, but customers will access integrated services through the Bybit.eu platform. Managing directors Georg Harer and Bernhard Krick emphasized that the EMI licence is a milestone in Bybit’s long-term European commitment, enabling strategic relationships with financial institutions and reducing reliance on third-party payment infrastructure. Specific product launch dates and rollout details will be announced later.
