Gold and XRP are painting two starkly different pictures right now. While the precious metal is charging toward record highs, the digital asset remains mired in a slow grind lower, underscoring a deep divergence between traditional safe havens and risk-on crypto.
Gold touched $4,321 per ounce on August 6, a seven-week high that capped a 4.18% daily surge. The longer-term trend is even more impressive: the yellow metal has gained about 6% over the past month and 26% over the past year. On Friday, August 7, spot gold rose another 0.6% to $4,264.22, and futures climbed 0.6% to $4,323.07, putting the weekly gain on track to be the largest since January. Silver and platinum also moved higher, up 1.2% and 0.6% respectively.
Two powerful forces are fueling the rally. First, escalating geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have lit a fire under safe-haven demand. Iranian media reported that Tehran struck what it called “hostile targets” in the waterway and warned it would block U.S. and Israeli vessels. A draft plan from Iran indicated it would reopen the strait only after a U.S. blockade is lifted and on its own terms. Yemen's Houthi movement separately claimed a large-scale attack on Saudi-backed forces, raising fears of a wider regional conflict. Gold briefly topped $4,300 on Thursday when hopes of a deal emerged, but the rally regained momentum as tensions flared again.
Second, monetary policy expectations are giving gold a further push. Markets are pricing in a roughly 55-60% chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has signaled readiness to raise borrowing costs if inflation remains stubborn. Yet lower oil prices earlier in the week—driven by temporary Hormuz-deal optimism—helped ease inflation fears, reducing immediate pressure on the Fed and lending support to gold. Chinese gold-backed ETFs have recorded 14 consecutive sessions of inflows, adding a steady stream of demand. IG senior market analyst Tony Sycamore said gold may have confirmed a bottom near the late-June low of $3,942 and that a break above the 200-day moving average near $4,489 could open the door toward $5,000.
Meanwhile, XRP is stuck in a different world. The token remains under pressure near the $1 mark, with bearish technical signals persisting. Exchange withdrawals have hinted at some holder confidence, but overall crypto sentiment stays weak. The contrast with gold’s surge highlights how XRP—and much of the crypto market—is struggling to attract safe-haven flows, even as traditional hedges roar ahead. With Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls report on the horizon, gold’s next move could set the tone for both assets.
