Binance founder Changpeng 'CZ' Zhao announced he is completely abandoning his public wallet after a routine effort to clear spam tokens spiraled into a $30 million market frenzy. Earlier in the day, on-chain analysts at Lookonchain noticed that CZ had burned 4,444 tokens from each of two third-party projects from his BNB Chain address. Speculators immediately read the moves as a hidden on-chain signal, ignoring that one of the burned assets was an unofficial clone.
The virtually dead clone coin's market capitalization surged from $40,000 to $30 million, with its price rising more than 30,000%, while the legitimate version of the token traded on Binance Alpha remained stable. The episode echoed the 2021 Shiba Inu scenario, when Vitalik Buterin burned SHIB tokens sent to him and triggered a supply shortage narrative.
CZ urged the community to stop over-interpreting his actions, explaining that he was simply testing the Trust Wallet app and trying to remove junk tokens that were blocking his view of his BNB balance. He admitted that the cleanup produced a Streisand effect: 'The more I burn, the more people will send meme coins to the address.' To end the manipulation around his name, CZ said he would empty the wallet completely and donate all legitimate BNB holdings and associated tokens to his educational charity project, Giggle Academy. He will then stop using the address entirely, turning it into a permanent burn address. Following the announcement, panic selling hit the surging clone, and its market capitalization collapsed to $5.26 million.
