Crypto-linked equities staged their sharpest one-day rally of the summer on Wednesday, lifted by Bitcoin's break back above $68,000 and a wave of regulatory news. Coinbase (COIN) rose roughly 9% to 11% intraday, touching $164.07 before settling near $162.88, while Strategy (MSTR) climbed nearly 12% to $103.58, Circle (CRCL) added about 9.44% to $78.50, and BitMine (BMNR) gained 9.68% to $20.05.
Bitcoin traded around $68,500, up 6% over 24 hours, with $486.85 million in spot Bitcoin ETF inflows recorded across the first two sessions of the week. Ethereum traded at $1,908, according to CoinGecko data. The broader crypto market grew more than 5% as Bitcoin's short squeeze toward $70,000 liquidated more than $1 billion in bearish crypto bets in a single hour. Analysts cautioned the move had the hallmarks of a short-covering bounce off summer lows rather than a confirmed trend reversal, especially as Coinbase, Strategy, and BitMine remain down 35% to 39% year to date.
The regulatory backdrop added fuel. The SEC proposed new cryptocurrency rules under a framework called Regulation Crypto Assets, while the U.S. Treasury proposed rules for the GENIUS Act stablecoin framework. Under the proposal, payment stablecoin issuers would need a federal or state license beginning January 18, 2027, and from July 18, 2028, digital asset platforms could offer or sell payment stablecoins to U.S. persons only if issued by a licensed issuer. Coinbase's partnership with Circle and its USDC stablecoin is seen as a direct beneficiary; Coinbase captured roughly $324.6 million in USDC distribution costs in Q2. Coinbase also launched direct Brazilian Real trading for USDC on its Advanced platform Wednesday.
Treasury liquidity and Washington meetings contributed to risk appetite. The U.S. Treasury said it would at least double its long-bond buyback program starting in September. President Trump was expected to sit down with SEC and CFTC leadership and crypto executives on market-structure rules, and the Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes were due later Wednesday.
Strategy held 840,447 BTC and $4.8 billion in cash as of its most recent weekly filing, and Goldman Sachs nearly quadrupled its Strategy stake to $555 million in Q2. BitMine held 5.82 million ETH, worth roughly $11.4 billion and equal to about 4.8% of Ethereum's circulating supply. Options positioning on Coinbase tilted bullish, with a full-chain put/call ratio of 0.39, and Polymarket put the probability of COIN closing higher at 98.6%. No company-specific catalyst drove the Coinbase move.
