Lighter's native token LIT experienced a dramatic intraday session on August 20, first rallying 28% to trade near $2.95, making it the top gainer among the top 100 cryptocurrencies. The rally accelerated during Asian and European trading hours, with the token climbing from around $2.30 to an intraday high of $2.97.
The buying was driven by a mix of regulatory speculation and concrete integration news. Ethereum developer Eric Conner highlighted that Lighter founder and CEO Vladimir Novakovski is a member of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC) Innovation Advisory Committee, which was holding its inaugural meeting in Washington. The committee, which includes executives from Coinbase, Uniswap Labs, Kraken, and Polymarket, advises the regulator on digital assets and blockchain technology. Traders speculated that a regulated route for decentralized perpetual futures in the US could benefit Lighter, especially after reports that rival platform Hyperliquid was also exploring a legal path into the US market. However, Lighter has not announced any plans to offer perpetual futures in the US, and the CFTC has not approved such a move, meaning the regulatory angle remains purely speculative.
Additional catalysts added fuel to the rally. Robinhood announced that eligible users in selected jurisdictions can access Lighter perpetual futures directly through its wallet, with Lighter committing 11 million LIT tokens to the Robinhood community. Eligible trades earn double the points available through Lighter's own web app. Furthermore, Turkish exchange Paribu listed LIT on August 19, expanding access. On-chain data revealed a previously inactive buyer accumulated 594,202 LIT in roughly six hours via CoW Protocol, spending about $1.57 million, and later increased the position to 648,876 LIT with a further $270,000 purchase, continuing to buy as the price increased.
Technical analysis showed a breakout above a two-week consolidation range, with the daily Aroon Up reaching 100% and Aroon Down at 0%, confirming strong momentum. Fibonacci extension levels placed the next resistance at $3.12 and then $3.69. However, the 4-hour Keltner Channel and CCI indicated overbought conditions, leaving LIT vulnerable to a pullback.
Later in the day, according to some data sources, LIT experienced a sharp 17.06% drop in just 30 minutes, with one report citing a price decline to around $0.30. This level is inconsistent with the earlier session's $2.95 and likely reflects a low-liquidity or reporting anomaly rather than a genuine collapse. The same report noted extremely low trading volume of just $56.43 and a market cap of approximately $13.76 million, suggesting the move occurred on thin liquidity, which can amplify price swings. Despite the pullback, the token's 24-hour gain remained extraordinarily high at 177.9%, underscoring the extreme volatility surrounding LIT.
