Zcash’s governance process is entering a crucial phase as a snapshot deadline arrives for holders who want to participate in a signal vote on sweeping changes to how ZEC is issued and how quickly its blockchain processes blocks. Data from CryptoSlate shows the privacy-focused cryptocurrency jumped roughly 62% over the past week, reaching a high near $880 before settling around $830 as of press time — its strongest level since 2018.
To be eligible, holders must have spendable shielded ZEC in the Ironwood wallet when the chain reaches block 3,459,350. Vote organizers Valar Group and Project Tachyon estimate the snapshot will occur around 19:00 UTC on Aug. 24, though block height determines eligibility; funds can be moved immediately afterward. Voting is scheduled to run from Aug. 25 through Sept. 14 at 19:00 UTC. Organizers say results will be considered representative if at least 1 million ZEC participates in at least one of the five questions, including abstentions.
The most consequential question asks whether to replace Zcash’s periodic halvings with a gradual issuance curve. That approach would recycle ZEC removed from circulation via the Network Sustainability Mechanism into future block rewards while leaving the total supply cap unchanged. Voters may instead choose to preserve halvings or leave issuance smoothing out of NU7. A separate question addresses when recycled ZEC should begin returning through block rewards, with options including as soon as possible, February 2027 or February 2031.
Holders will also vote on cutting Zcash’s target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds under ZIP 218, which would roughly triple the number of targeted blocks per day while adjusting rewards to keep issuance broadly unchanged. Remaining questions cover disabling deprecated Sprout pool transactions and whether NU7 should launch without features that miss a Sept. 30 implementation deadline or be delayed until all approved changes are ready.
Because the poll is a signaling vote, approved measures would still need development and deployment before becoming consensus rules. Monday’s snapshot is therefore the immediate eligibility deadline for holders seeking a voice in the potential reshaping of Zcash’s monetary schedule and network performance.
