Metaplanet Moves 1,000 BTC to Coinbase as CEO Clarifies Share Dilution

Key takeaways:

  • Metaplanet's Coinbase deposit raises sell-side speculation, but custody use muddies the signal.
  • Gerovich's dilution emphasizes the equity cost of Metaplanet's aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy.
  • Superplanet's proposed 2,100 BTC contribution risks regulatory hurdles despite creating a new BTC proxy.

Metaplanet transferred 1,000 BTC worth roughly $79.77 million to Coinbase Prime on Aug. 25, 2026, according to blockchain analytics account Lookonchain. Neither Metaplanet nor Coinbase has confirmed a sale, and a deposit into Coinbase Prime does not automatically mean disposal because the platform offers institutional custody, financing and trading services.

The Japanese Bitcoin treasury company holds 43,000 BTC valued at approximately $3.4 billion at current prices, with an average acquisition price near $96,191 per coin. On Aug. 12, CEO Simon Gerovich had already clarified that an earlier move of 5,014 BTC between custodial addresses was not a sale. The latest transfer raises similar questions, but no official treasury disclosure has confirmed any reduction in Metaplanet’s beneficial ownership.

Separately, Gerovich addressed shareholder dilution after his personal stake fell from 17.99% to 14.19%. He said the decrease was caused by new share issuance rather than personal stock sales, and that he has not sold a single share. Metaplanet has been called Asia’s MicroStrategy because it issues shares to accumulate Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset.

In another pending development, Metaplanet agreed to contribute 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash to Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise, which would be renamed Superplanet with ticker SUPA. That transaction still requires shareholder approval, Nasdaq compliance and regulatory procedures in the U.S. and Japan, with a targeted Q4 2026 closing. There is no official evidence connecting the 1,000 BTC transfer to the pending Super League transaction.
