Coinbase Wallet Returns as Multichain Trading Hub After Base App Experiment

Key takeaways:

  • Coinbase Wallet's multichain trading pivot signals retreat from social apps toward self-custody perps.
  • Hyperliquid perps may boost BTC and ETH leverage demand, but U.S. restrictions curb access.
  • Tokenized stocks on Base could deepen ETH utility, but U.S. exclusion limits sentiment.

Coinbase has restored the Coinbase Wallet name just over a year after replacing it with Base App, positioning the self-custodial product around multichain trading, perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks.

Ryan Kass, head of Coinbase Wallet product, said the rebrand reflects a shift away from the social-first 'everything app' experiment and back toward a 'test kitchen' for assets and experiences not available on the main Coinbase exchange. 'The Coinbase Wallet name better captures the product’s role as Coinbase’s self-custodial front door to the everything exchange,' Kass said. Users can access any asset regardless of chain, with support for Base, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Monad, and the newly added Robinhood Chain.

The trading push is led by Hyperliquid perpetual futures, which Coinbase added in August. Eligible users outside restricted jurisdictions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada can trade more than 290 markets with leverage of up to 50x on certain contracts, covering assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, stocks and commodities. Coinbase also added tokenized stocks for Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet on Base, issued through a Coinbase-controlled entity in the Abu Dhabi Global Market and unavailable to U.S. persons.

The return to Coinbase Wallet follows the failure of Base App’s social features. CEO Brian Armstrong said in March that the social experiment 'didn’t quite work,' and Base creator Jesse Pollak later acknowledged demand for social products had 'disintegrated completely.' Pollak handed leadership of the app to Jordan 'Cobie' Fish in July and returned to Base. Messaging and selected functions will remain available, but the product now prioritizes trading, transfers, earning, and onchain discovery.

Kass said Base remains central to Coinbase Wallet, but the company does not want to limit what users can trade. The wallet remains self-custodial and automatically hides tokens classified as scams or malicious assets. Although Coinbase promotes the wallet with the phrase 'no KYC, no waiting, and no borders,' individual products remain subject to location-based limits and compliance reviews.
