President Donald Trump told a crowd at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday that he would send a $5,000 “dividend” to every adult American citizen if Republicans win both the House and Senate in November’s midterm elections. “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them… I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said, adding that the money must be spent inside the United States.
The proposal would apply to roughly 245 million US citizens aged 18 and above, putting the estimated cost at about $1.2 trillion, with some reports placing the total above $1 trillion. That figure sits alongside the $1.27 trillion already spent on national debt interest this fiscal year and $1.36 trillion committed to defense spending in 2026. The US national deficit is nearing $1.8 trillion for the fiscal year, and the Congressional Budget Office projects the full-year 2026 deficit will reach $2.1 trillion. The national debt stood at 122.6% of GDP in Q1 2026.
Crypto traders picked up on the idea almost instantly. Mark Chadwick, posting on X, said: “If this happens, and it’s a big IF – but if it does it would ignite the most insane Alt Season imaginable.” He compared the potential effect with the 2021 crypto market, calling it a “2021 Covid stim type catalyst” layered onto a bull market he already sees building. However, economist Peter Schiff dismissed the plan as an attempt to buy votes, calling it “a $5,000 bribe” and warning that printing the money would push inflation well past anything seen under the Biden administration.
Analyst Matthew Hyland has pointed out that charts including ETH, Total 2, Total 3, and OTHERS have all broken multi-year downtrends, concluding that “the largest Altcoin Bull Run of all time is loading.” The setup is not without risk: altcoin perpetual futures open interest overtook Bitcoin’s for the first time since December 2024, with Zcash alone carrying roughly $2.4 billion in open derivatives positions. Investor Michael Bucella compared the situation to October 2025, right before a market-wide liquidation event.
Legal questions also surround Trump’s promise. Under federal law, offering money to influence how someone votes is a criminal offense, with penalties including fines and up to two years in prison for willful violations. CNBC reached out to the White House for comment but did not receive a response. The proposal follows previous unfulfilled promises, including a $5,000 “DOGE dividend” and a $2,000 “tariff rebate” that collapsed after the Supreme Court struck down his tariff regime in early 2026.
