XRP Ledger (XRPL) developers have formally set a target to make the network fully quantum-resistant by 2028, positioning it one year ahead of Ethereum's roadmap, which extends through 2029. According to Vet, an XRPL Foundation contributor and validator on the decentralized Unique Node List (dUNL), significant progress and a hybrid deployment of new security protocols could begin as early as 2027.
The strategy rests on three key architectural features. Native key rotation will allow cryptographic keys to be updated while preserving existing r-addresses, avoiding forced asset migration. A "Quantum-Day" emergency response protocol is designed to isolate vulnerable accounts instantly if quantum computing breakthroughs occur, without shutting down the ledger. Developers are also actively testing quantum-resistant algorithms, with new protocols deployed through a hybrid approach alongside the current system.
The plan has renewed debate over XRPL's technological standing relative to Algorand, which has launched quantum-secured accounts based on Falcon-1024 signatures. Vet cautioned that Algorand is only partially protected because much of its network still relies on the vulnerable Ed25519 standard and full integration may not be complete before 2027. Ripple's Project Eleven includes a full security audit of every XRPL layer, from validators to network infrastructure, with a testing phase, parallel use of old and new signatures in 2027, and a final mainnet upgrade in 2028.
