Ripple is moving XRP beyond traditional cross-border payments and into the emerging machine economy. Through RippleX’s AI Starter Kit version 1.1, the XRP Ledger now supports the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard co-developed by Stripe and Tempo. The integration allows AI agents to pay for digital services using XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin without going through a conventional checkout. Ripple has emphasized that this does not mean Stripe Checkout now accepts XRP directly.
The new tooling lets a service respond to an AI agent’s request with an HTTP 402 message containing the price and payment instructions. The agent’s wallet checks its spending rules, signs the payment, and the provider releases the resource after settlement. RippleX says a single XRPL payment generally settles in three to five seconds with a fee below one cent. For repeated usage, XRP supports payment sessions through XRP Ledger Payment Channels, reducing activity to two onchain transactions: opening the channel and settling the final amount.
RLUSD currently supports single payments only. Session payments for RLUSD are planned but depend on the proposed XLS-93d amendment. The release also adds support for the Open Wallet Standard, storing wallets in an encrypted local vault so AI agents can request payments without reading the raw private key, while owners keep control over spending limits and approved assets.
RippleX says the earlier x402 integration has generated 5.6 million XRPL transactions, though it has not separated testing from production activity or disclosed value transferred. The MPP package remains in beta and no production customer has been named. The announcement adds to XRP’s institutional narrative: XRP ETFs have continued accumulating tokens amid market volatility, and Ripple-backed Evernorth is preparing for a potential Nasdaq listing with roughly 473 million XRP. Whether AI agents become a meaningful source of XRP volume will depend on developers choosing XRP Ledger among competing settlement rails.
