Bitcoin has overtaken Tesla in the ranking of the world’s largest assets, according to a CompaniesMarketCap snapshot from September 19, 2026. The cryptocurrency’s market capitalization reached approximately $1.635 trillion, placing it 13th globally, while Tesla followed at 14th with a market cap of roughly $1.438 trillion.
The snapshot showed Bitcoin trading near $81,419 after a gain of around 4%, whereas Tesla shares were down about 0.5% at $364.27. The move left Bitcoin roughly $197 billion, or nearly 14%, ahead of the automaker.
The two valuations are calculated differently. Bitcoin’s market cap multiplies its price by the estimated circulating supply, while Tesla’s figure multiplies its share price by the company’s outstanding shares. The ranking is therefore a scale comparison rather than a claim that both assets should be valued using the same framework. It is also sensitive to price: Bitcoin would have been close to Tesla’s valuation at roughly $71,600 per coin, assuming Tesla’s market cap remained unchanged.
Tesla reported holding 11,509 BTC as of June 30, 2026, with a disclosed cost basis of $386 million and a quarter-end fair value of $674 million. At Bitcoin’s snapshot price, those coins would have been worth approximately $937 million, reflecting market appreciation rather than new purchases. BitcoinTreasuries.net continued to list Tesla with 11,509 BTC when checked on September 19.
The tracker also attributes 18,712 BTC to SpaceX, placing it above Tesla among corporate Bitcoin holders. Together, Tesla and SpaceX hold about 30,221 BTC, worth roughly $2.46 billion at the September 19 price, equivalent to around 0.15% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply. The companies hold their coins separately, and the total does not represent Elon Musk’s personal Bitcoin ownership.
Tesla’s next filing will reveal whether its strategy has changed. If the balance remains at 11,509 BTC, the growing valuation will have come from the market rather than a renewed treasury program. A change in the balance would signal either new purchases or another sale.
