BitGo and Coinbase Race to Harden Bitcoin Custody Against Quantum Threats

Key takeaways:

  • Bitcoin’s long-term security narrative strengthens as Coinbase and BitGo build post-quantum custody infrastructure.
  • Institutional crypto adoption may accelerate if quantum-resistant custody reduces tail risks for $250B assets.
  • Watch BTC infrastructure upgrades as a structural trend, not an immediate price catalyst for traders.

Cryptocurrency custodians BitGo and Coinbase are intensifying preparations for a post-quantum future, framing quantum computing as a solvable engineering challenge rather than an existential threat to Bitcoin’s security.

BitGo CEO Mike Belshe, speaking on Coin Stories, said wallet design has historically focused on optimizing transaction fees. Now BitGo is innovating to prevent public key exposure and strengthen security for Bitcoin users. Belshe described quantum threats as solvable engineering problems and suggested proactive risk management could redefine custodial standards.

Coinbase is taking a parallel path. Yehuda Lindell, head of cryptography, told MARA Foundation TV the exchange is building post-quantum custody safeguards for roughly $250 billion in institutional assets, including holdings for BlackRock. A key challenge is that many post-quantum signature schemes may not be MPC-friendly, especially hash-based signatures, which are considered quantum-resistant but lack the arithmetic structure needed for traditional key splitting.

Coinbase’s fallback architecture would combine post-quantum threshold decryption with programmable hardware security modules, allowing full private keys to be assembled only inside physically secure HSMs. Lindell said the goal is to be ready for any signature scheme Bitcoin or other chains eventually adopt, adding: “I can support anything.”

Although no immediate quantum attack exists, the custodians’ moves highlight a strategic shift toward long-term security infrastructure for Bitcoin and broader digital asset custody.
