Key takeaways:

  • XRP Ledger's million AI-agent transactions signal agentic payments may become a structural crypto demand driver.
  • Amazon's Muse blockade highlights fragmentation risk, favoring open rails like XRP over walled-garden agentic commerce.
  • Shopify's 7% pop reflects equity-level optimism, not yet a confirmed catalyst for crypto payment tokens.

Shopify shares surged more than 7% after the e-commerce giant confirmed a partnership with Meta that allows Meta’s AI agent, Muse, to complete purchases at Shopify-powered stores through Shop Pay. CEO Tobi Lütke announced the integration on X, describing it as an “easy and delightful way to shop and check out with Muse.” The stock closed at $137.92 on Monday and added more than 5% in pre-market trading Tuesday.

Meta launched Muse earlier in September as an AI agent designed to handle real-world tasks such as booking appointments, managing finances, and now online shopping. The integration makes Shopify one of the first major e-commerce platforms to enable agentic checkout, with Shopify’s merchant dashboard listing Meta as an AI sales channel. Sellers can expose products through Shopify Catalog and manage direct checkout access.

Deutsche Bank analysts pushed back on concerns that AI shopping agents could disrupt Shopify’s model. They argued the deal reinforces Shopify’s strengths in structured product data, merchant connectivity, and Shop Pay checkout infrastructure. “The partnership suggests the opposite,” the analysts wrote regarding fears that agentic AI would bypass e-commerce platforms.

Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on its platform. The company said third-party applications making purchases on behalf of customers should respect a retailer’s right to opt out, and asked Meta to remove Amazon from Muse’s reach. Amazon also blocks OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Perplexity’s Comet from making purchases, citing concerns over ad revenue and third-party bots.

The partnership highlights the emerging agentic commerce sector. Mastercard is developing agentic payment infrastructure, while blockchain projects are experimenting with machine-to-machine transactions and programmable spending controls. According to the report, the XRP Ledger has already processed nearly one million AI-agent transactions, showing how autonomous software can pay for APIs, cloud services, and digital resources without manual checkout.
