Zcash Gets Physically Backed ETP on Nasdaq Stockholm

Key takeaways:

  • VIRZEC's Nordic launch expands ZEC access, but lacks shielded privacy, limiting appeal for privacy-focused investors.
  • Tiny initial VIRZEC AUM mirrors 21Shares Zcash ETP, signaling access alone won't spark ZEC demand.
  • Watch post-launch VIRZEC AUM and spreads for sustained ZEC demand amid volatile U.S. privacy-coin flows.

Zcash is entering a new access point for Nordic investors as Virtune launched its VIRZEC exchange-traded product on Nasdaq Stockholm on October 6. The product is physically backed and designed to track ZEC’s market price through an ordinary securities account, with underlying ZEC held in Coinbase cold storage and shares traded in Swedish kronor.

The launch arrives just after Zcash marked ten years since its first ATM launch in Singapore, a milestone highlighted by Grayscale. The conversation around Zcash has shifted from physical cash machines to policy frameworks for private currencies, reflecting growing regulatory attention to privacy-focused cryptocurrency, especially in Singapore.

For investors using brokers such as Avanza or Nordnet, VIRZEC removes the need to open a crypto-exchange account, manage wallet software, or hold private keys. However, the ETP does not provide a Zcash wallet or shielded-payment access. Direct ZEC can be transferred through transparent or shielded addresses where supported, while a VIRZEC holder owns a broker-recorded security backed by pooled ZEC.

Virtune reports more than 160,000 investors across its crypto ETP range and roughly $380 million in assets under management. Before the first trading day, VIRZEC showed about $97,000 in assets under management, which is best viewed as opening inventory until later flow data confirms demand. Other wrappers show that availability does not guarantee immediate scale: the 21Shares Zcash ETP launched on September 21 had roughly $100,000 in AUM, while a U.S.-listed Zcash ETF disclosed that DCG acquired about $100 million in shares in exchange for 85,705 ZEC. U.S. flow data has been volatile, including net inflows above $100 million in September and a $93.56 million net outflow on October 2.

The next evidence for VIRZEC will be post-launch assets, trading activity, and bid-ask spreads. A sustained increase beyond initial issuance would indicate that Nordic investor access is turning into actual ZEC demand.
