Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz expects tokenization, easing regulatory barriers and artificial intelligence agents to significantly broaden decentralized finance adoption among retail consumers in 2027. In a recent interview covered on Oct. 19, 2026, Schwartz said blockchain financial services could move beyond cryptocurrency enthusiasts and serve users who currently rely on conventional banking and investment platforms.
Schwartz pointed to growing momentum in asset tokenization as regulatory restrictions begin to ease. He argued that tokenized financial products using blockchain infrastructure could attract ordinary consumers without requiring them to understand the underlying technology. He compared blockchain’s potential consumer market to the large audiences that support applications on Android and iOS devices, saying: “That’s the world that’s gonna be super exciting. And we’re really close.”
Beyond tokenization, Schwartz identified AI agents as another development that could transform retail access to DeFi. Automated agents could manage routine personal financial activities, reduce the need for users to navigate complex decentralized applications, and change how decentralized finance platforms are designed. Schwartz emphasized that understanding consumer expectations in an AI-driven financial environment remains an important challenge for the industry.
The XRP Ledger ecosystem already shows early signs of automated activity. According to reports, XRPL has recorded approximately 13.5 million automated payments, though Schwartz described everyday consumer financial management through AI agents as a future possibility rather than an immediate reality. If tokenization and AI integration continue, blockchain-based financial services could eventually lower technical barriers and reach a mainstream consumer market.
