Silver Tests 45-Year Support at $56.85 as Analysts See Long Consolidation Before Next Rally

Key takeaways:

  • Monthly close below $56.85 would invalidate the 45-year breakout, shifting long-term bias bearish.
  • Silver's dual role as industrial metal amplifies downside during economic slowdowns compared to gold.
  • Watch $63 reclaim as first bullish confirmation; failure could extend consolidation toward $94.

Silver is trading near $57 after a dramatic decline from its January 29 all-time high around $121.50, and two technical analysts now describe the current area as one of the most important long-term decision zones for the metal.

Analyst Axis Balance shared a daily logarithmic chart showing silver is retesting a breakout line that dates back roughly 45 years, with support around $56.85. According to his prior roadmap, silver was expected to move first to $63 and then to this long-term breakout area. If silver can hold the zone on a monthly closing basis, the decline may still be viewed as part of the “handle” of a much larger cup formation rather than a failure of the long-term bullish structure.

Axis Balance identified the first recovery level at $63, followed by resistance between $67.7 and $70, then roughly $71.4. A much larger resistance area sits between approximately $88 and $94. The January high near $121.50 remains a long-term reference but is not treated as an immediate target; the chart allows for a multi-year basing period before another larger advance.

The key risk is the monthly close. If silver closes a month below the 45-year breakout line, that old support could begin acting as resistance and weaken the larger cup-and-handle interpretation. Axis Balance frames the near-term structure as simple: hold around $56, begin recovering, reclaim $63, and then push toward $67.7–$70. Losing the breakout line on a monthly basis would make the long-term setup much weaker.

Macro conditions remain difficult. Hotter U.S. inflation recently pushed Treasury yields and the dollar higher, creating headwinds for precious metals. September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year, strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve could keep policy tighter for longer. Silver also has a larger industrial component than gold, so concerns about economic growth, manufacturing demand and risk appetite can hurt silver even when safe-haven demand supports gold.

A separate long-term monthly chart from technical analyst Patrick Karim offers what he calls a “sobering” outlook for silver bulls. Karim remains bullish on the eventual destination but argues the path may involve a lengthy consolidation first. He estimates silver could take roughly another two years to establish a monthly move above the $94–$95 region, with approximately $94.06 as the next large structural barrier. He compares the current structure to the period after the 2011 silver rally, when an initial collapse was followed by years of weaker price action.

Karim says a rising long-term support line underneath the current structure “must hold,” and the outlook deteriorates if silver loses it. His chart shows two potential paths: an emotional scenario with a rapid move through $95 and a rally toward roughly $158, and a slower, more realistic sequence in which silver challenges $94–$95 and then spends more time consolidating before a larger move develops. His timeline stretches toward August 2028. At current levels in the upper $50s, a move to $94 would still represent roughly 65% upside, while the marked $158 region would be nearly 180% higher.
