The U.S. cryptocurrency and derivatives landscape is facing a new structural test after the SEC approved a Cboe Global Markets rule change permitting binary options tied to operating key performance indicators of 23 public companies, including crypto-linked firms Coinbase, Robinhood, and Marathon Digital.
The approval, signed by Paul Atkins and communicated on 13 October 2026, received limited attention while Bitcoin traded near $81,000. The contracts are yes/no, cash-settled, and European-style, with exercise only at expiration. Their underlyings are not asset prices but metrics such as Coinbase trading volume, Robinhood clients and revenue, or Marathon bitcoin production; settlement references SEC filings rather than commercial earnings presentations.
The SEC explicitly did not modify CFTC supervision of event contracts similar to Kalshi, creating a nuanced regulatory boundary between securities-rule products and event contracts under CFTC oversight. For the crypto sector, the key challenge is that operating KPIs publish with lag, can be revised, and depend on accounting definitions, making clear contractual specifications and data governance essential.
Robinhood’s event-contract revenue exceeded $156 million in the second quarter, and distribution through the brokerage could broaden retail access. However, binary payoffs concentrate outcome risk and can produce total loss of premium, requiring education, suitability controls, and liquidity disclosure. Cboe and brokerages are urged to publish depth metrics, spreads, and market-maker participation.
Meanwhile, a separate Financial Times report said Blockchain.com and Binance US are moving to launch prediction market services in the United States as a prolonged token market slump pressures trading-fee revenue. The report does not confirm launch dates, projected earnings, or state-level availability, and regulatory treatment of event-based contracts remains uncertain.
Bitcoin defended its 50-day moving average and analysts maintained a bullish bias according to CoinDesk, but the report cautions that correlation between Bitcoin price and crypto company operating KPIs is imperfect. The broader measure expands derivatives infrastructure but makes market structure, supervision, and investor protection the central test.
