Micron Technology shares closed at $913.67 on Wednesday 21 October, up 1.96%, before slipping to $898.43 in after-hours trading. The move came as the Taoyuan Enterprise Union of Micron Memory Taiwan launched a 24-hour warning strike at 9 a.m. local time on 22 October, following failed profit-sharing talks at Taoyuan City Government.
Taiwan's Central News Agency counted 11 union officials on the picket line at the start; AFP counted five workers. The action was authorized by a ballot in which 1,994 of 2,258 eligible members, or 88.3%, supported a strike. However participation fell far short of the mandate, and no source reported output disruption. The Taoyuan plant in Hwaya Technology Park employs about 3,000 people, roughly 2,400 of them union members.
The union is demanding a permanent system distributing 15% of Micron's global operating profit to employees, paid quarterly from fiscal 2027, plus no-free-rider and non-retaliation clauses. For fiscal 2026, both unions sought a one-time bonus equal to about 83 months of pay per Taiwan employee. Micron offered rewards worth 35 to 68 months of pay in September, including a minimum cash payout of NT$1.7 million per employee and a separate NT$1 million cash bonus for longer-tenured staff. The Taoyuan union rejected the package, saying a one-time bonus cannot replace a long-term profit-sharing system.
Micron settled separately with its larger Taichung union on 21 October. The Taichung site in Houli Science Park is Micron's largest Taiwan facility, employing about 12,300 people with roughly 11,000 union members. Specific terms were not disclosed.
CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has said the company does not have "line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance." Micron posted record fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $54.23 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $33.42, with full-year revenue of $133.19 billion and operating margin of 74.6%. TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract prices to climb another 10% to 15% in the current quarter.
Western Digital reports fiscal Q1 2027 results after Thursday's close, with consensus around $4.05 EPS on $4.14 billion revenue. Analysts see WDC as the real catalyst for memory stocks. Cantor Fitzgerald's C.J. Muse reiterated an Overweight rating and $2,000 price target on Micron, citing 16 strategic supply agreements covering roughly half of projected revenue. The average analyst target is $1,585.93.
