Traditional-asset perpetual contracts are reshaping crypto derivatives activity. Talos's State of the Market report for October 15-21 showed $55.3 billion in weekly volume for gold, oil, stock and other traditional-asset perpetuals, equivalent to 60.3% of Bitcoin perpetual volume and up 26.2% from the prior period.
Total futures volume tracked by Talos rose 4.8% to $1.03 trillion. Hyperliquid was the fastest-growing venue with a 17.4% volume increase. Gold perps traded $11.5 billion, SpaceX contracts on Binance reached $8.9 billion, up 35.8%, and crude oil perps hit $6.6 billion, up 25.9%. Memory-chip exposure surged: SK Hynix perp volume on Hyperliquid rose 75%, while Micron perp volume on Binance rose 22% as AI and memory stocks sold off.
The selloff followed September inflation at 3.7% and a 10-year Treasury yield above 5%, with CoreWeave falling about 25% as its bond yields neared 16%. The Nasdaq 100 ended the week down 0.4%. SpaceX reported third-quarter results after Tuesday's close with revenue growth of 161%. Binance's SPCX contract rose 8.5% by Wednesday's U.S. open, and SpaceX perps on Binance and Hyperliquid traded about $5.6 billion, more than eight times the previous day's volume.
Bitcoin remained comparatively calm, up 3.3% and above $84,000 on Wednesday. Bitcoin futures open interest rose 6% to $47.9 billion, with funding at 5.4% annualized, indicating a mild long bias. Talos said traders were not abandoning Bitcoin for stock and commodity contracts.
Separately, Dune data showed Hyperliquid's notional volume in stock perpetuals, ETFs and indices reached $201 billion in Q3 2026, far outpacing the $37 billion spot market for tokenized stocks. Hyperliquid's perpetuals settle on-chain with leverage and funding payments, without transferring shareholder rights or requiring custody of conventional shares.
Talos pointed to the October 28 Fed decision and upcoming big-tech earnings as the next tests, especially with Bitcoin's 30-day correlation to the Nasdaq at 0.6.
