Aviva Investors Launches Tokenized Sterling Fund Share Class on XRP Ledger

Key takeaways:

  • Aviva's £50M XRPL pilot signals institutional tokenization demand, but scale remains tiny versus £22B fund.
  • Digital-twin structure lowers regulatory friction, encouraging more European fund tokenization on XRPL.
  • Watch XRP sentiment around Swell; real adoption needs follow-through beyond pilot announcements.

Aviva Investors has expanded its partnership with Ripple by launching a tokenized share class of its £22 billion Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger, the companies announced on October 26, 2026. Aviva committed £50 million ($66 million) to the new sterling share class, lifting its combined tokenized money market fund investments above £86 million ($116 million).

The £22 billion figure refers to the total assets under management in the conventional Sterling Liquidity Fund, not the amount moved on-chain. The Ireland-domiciled UCITS fund, established in 2002, invests in high-grade, short-term sterling-denominated debt instruments and targets low-risk returns with daily liquidity. The new share class uses a digital-twin structure, meaning fund ownership is represented on XRPL while underlying portfolio holdings and existing regulatory arrangements remain unchanged.

According to Ripple and Aviva, eligible investors retain the same investment objective, risk profile, liquidity characteristics and regulatory protections available to conventional shareholders. Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey said: “We believe tokenised funds can increase efficiency and ultimately lead to improved client outcomes.” Ripple senior vice president Nigel Khakoo added that markets are moving toward 24/7 access and real-time settlement.

The infrastructure is supported by institutional custodian Komainu, tokenization platform Licuido, and BNY Mellon as custodian of the fund’s underlying assets. Ripple said the XRP Ledger has processed more than 4 billion transactions since 2012, supports nearly 8 million active wallets, and is maintained by more than 130 independent validators.

The launch follows Aviva’s first tokenized fund on July 29, 2026, a digital share class for its U.S. Dollar Liquidity Fund approved by the Central Bank of Ireland. It also arrives before Ripple’s Swell conference in New York on October 27–29, where institutional tokenization is expected to feature. The announcement places Aviva among Europe’s largest tokenized money market fund providers and adds to a growing institutional trend that includes JPMorgan’s expansion of two funds onto Solana, Franklin Templeton’s Benji platform, and BlackRock’s BUIDL fund.
