Coinbase Captures 26.7% of Tokenized-Stock DEX Volume as T7X Pushes Native Issuance

Key takeaways:

  • Coinbase’s near-parity with Robinhood signals tokenized equities may strengthen COIN’s competitive positioning.
  • Regulatory preference for rights-bearing tokens favors native issuers over synthetic wrappers, lowering legal-risk exposure.
  • Watch if $2.7 billion weekly volume grows; thin liquidity remains a tokenized-equity adoption risk.

Tokenized equities are becoming a more competitive part of crypto market structure. Over the past week, Coinbase accounted for 26.7% of decentralized exchange trading volume among tokenized stock issuers, putting it just behind Robinhood at 27.3%. The figures, highlighted by Token Terminal, cover 18 issuers and roughly $2.7 billion in weekly trading volume.

The shift strengthens Coinbase's position in the tokenized asset market. The exchange issues tokenized stocks through the Abu Dhabi Global Market, a structure that could draw more traders and, eventually, institutional capital into regulated on-chain equity exposure.

At the same time, T7X is arguing that the market needs deeper legal foundations. Research cited by T7X from Pantera Capital found that 77.6% of 593 tokenized assets across 11 asset classes were digital wrappers around traditional infrastructure rather than securities with their own legal status. T7X's native issuance model makes the token part of the authorized issuance from the start, with issuer authorization, investor verification and transfer-agent validation aligned around one security, one authorized issuance and one ownership record.

Wyoming law recognizes a certificate token, allowing corporate shares to be represented on a blockchain. T7X is incorporated in Wyoming and structures its issuances around that framework. In its administrated offerings, T7X Equities acts as the SEC-registered transfer agent, maintaining the master securityholder file while blockchain transactions provide the digital ownership layer.

T7X's first example is the Tranquil Healthcare Fund I, a Tier 2 Regulation A+ offering of up to $75 million that the SEC qualified on June 29. Tokens representing shares are issued on Trusted Smart Chain and delivered to investor wallets. T7X Chief Executive Pablo Penaloza has argued that as long as a transfer agent is involved, securities cannot disappear without trace, and he predicts tokenized portfolios will eventually surpass the market capitalization of public markets.

Regulatory differentiation is intensifying. The SEC's innovation exemption covers tokenized stocks carrying dividend and voting rights while excluding price-tracking synthetics, and Nasdaq's arrangement with Kraken similarly focuses on rights-bearing tokens. That favors native issuance over receipt-style wrappers and may accelerate the integration of traditional securities with blockchain rails.
