Bitcoin is sending conflicting signals as on-chain data reveals a sharp increase in holders alongside one of the heaviest realized-loss streaks since August. According to Bitfinex, the number of Bitcoin holders jumped from 738,000 to 1.05 million in just four days, with buying interest concentrating between $77,000 and $80,000. Open interest has also risen, indicating that traders are positioning for potential volatility, while ETFs and short-term holders have been distributing into the strength.
At the same time, Glassnode reports that Bitcoin has posted its longest consecutive daily realized-loss streak since mid-August, with sellers locking in losses as price traded below $80,000. The firm identifies $75,000 as a key level to hold; previous loss clusters in August and September formed around local lows. The pressure is reflected in profitability data: approximately $707 billion in Bitcoin capital remains at a loss, compared with only $380 billion in profit. That means nearly twice as much invested capital is currently underwater.
Retail activity is also cooling. Analyst Darkfost notes that Binance’s 30-day average retail Bitcoin inflows have fallen to just 281 BTC, down from cycle peaks near 2,700 BTC. The decline contrasts with the 2019–2021 cycle and even with post-FTX collapse inflows around 1,900 BTC. Darkfost attributes the shift partly to January 2024 spot Bitcoin ETF launches, which gave investors exposure without self-custody risks, as well as tighter U.S. and European regulations and changing investor behavior.
The combination of rising holder counts and depressed retail inflows leaves Bitcoin at a critical juncture. Traders will watch whether accumulation near $77,000–$80,000 can absorb selling pressure, and whether the $75,000 support holds in the sessions ahead.
