Solana has activated a new consensus protocol, Alpenglow, on its mainnet, targeting transaction finality of approximately 150 milliseconds. The upgrade replaces the network's previous TowerBFT protocol and represents a major step in Solana's technical roadmap.
According to the Solana Foundation's October ecosystem roundup, the network completed two protocol upgrades. On October 9, the final stage of SIMD-0525 reduced Solana's target slot time from the original 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds, effectively halving the interval between block-production opportunities. On October 21, Alpenglow went live on mainnet, bringing consensus finality down to roughly 150 milliseconds. The changes target lower latency at both block production and confirmation layers.
October also brought a wave of developer tooling updates. Jito introduced BAM Direct Bundle Ingest, allowing approved participants to submit transaction bundles directly to BAM nodes. Solana Microscope launched as an open-source monitoring tool for programs and Squads multisigs. Jupiter's Swap API added opt-in support for Transaction V1, and the Solana Asset Registry introduced asset classifications and data feeds. These releases arrived alongside record real-world asset value across the ecosystem and are expected to support greater institutional access.
The upgrades position Solana as a faster, more efficient blockchain for decentralized applications and crypto projects. Traders and developers will be watching whether faster finality and more frequent slots translate into higher transaction volumes, stronger user engagement, and new use cases.
