PayPal Partners with OpenAI to Integrate Digital Wallet into ChatGPT

PayPal has announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate its digital wallet directly into ChatGPT, positioning it as the first payment option embedded within the AI platform.

The agreement, confirmed over the weekend and publicly revealed by PayPal CEO Alex Chriss in a CNBC interview, will enable users to purchase items discovered through ChatGPT using a "Buy with PayPal" button for a secure payment experience.

Chriss emphasized that this move aligns with the emerging "era of agentic commerce," where AI serves as a shopping assistant, and it leverages PayPal's hundreds of millions of account holders.

Integration is scheduled to begin next year, allowing merchants to list their inventory on ChatGPT without separate registration with OpenAI, while PayPal manages all payment processing using funds from linked bank accounts, cards, or stored balances.

This initiative expands OpenAI's e-commerce strategy, which already includes integrations with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart, and aims to tap into ChatGPT's 700 million weekly users.

Following the announcement, PayPal's stock (PYPL) surged 14.52% to $80.45 in U.S. premarket trading, adding nearly $13 billion to its market capitalization and reflecting investor optimism.
