This update moves the system from version 19.1 to 19.6 and is the first step in a scheduled multi-phase upgrade cycle aimed at improving network stability and preparing for future expansion.
Originally targeting February 12, the deadline was extended due to network congestion and technical issues. The Pi core team has issued a clear warning: nodes that fail to update by the deadline risk being disconnected from the network. To mitigate system strain, node operators have been advised to stagger their upgrades.
This upgrade is critical because nodes are fundamental to the Pi Network's operation. They run on personal computers (not mobile phones) and are responsible for validating transactions and maintaining consensus using a system based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol, rather than proof-of-work mining. The network features three participation tiers: basic desktop app users, regular nodes, and supernodes, with the latter handling the core consensus process and requiring 24/7 uptime.
The February 15 update is just the beginning. The team has already scheduled subsequent versions, with version 19.9 expected by February 27 and version 20.2 planned for March 12. Each phase is designed to introduce new features, technical fixes, and bolster the network's gradual path toward decentralization.
