Binance Proof-of-Reserves: BTC Holdings Climb as ETH and USDT Fall

Key takeaways:

  • Rising BTC balances across exchanges signal capital rotation into Bitcoin over Ethereum and stablecoins.
  • Declining USDT reserves could reduce exchange liquidity, limiting short-term buying pressure despite Bitcoin inflows.
  • Ethereum outflows may reflect staking or self-custody, not selling, keeping neutral-to-bullish ETH sentiment intact.

Binance has released its 45th Proof of Reserves report based on a snapshot taken on August 1, 2026, showing a continued monthly increase in customer Bitcoin balances and a simultaneous decline in Ethereum and Tether holdings.

According to the exchange’s reserve dashboard, users held approximately 657,000 BTC, up 2.55% or 16,349 BTC compared with the July 1 snapshot. This marked a third consecutive monthly rise in Binance customer Bitcoin balances, following increases of 25,838 BTC in May and 7,715 BTC in June. Across the three monthly reports, users added nearly 50,000 BTC between May and August, although the data does not distinguish between purchases, deposits from external wallets, or internal transfers.

In contrast, Ethereum balances declined for a second consecutive snapshot. Users held about 3.98 million ETH, down 2.57%, or 105,154 ETH, after falling 58,591 ETH in the previous month. Tether balances also dropped by roughly 870 million USDT to approximately 32.9 billion USDT, marking a third monthly decline from about 34.3 billion USDT in June and 33.7 billion USDT in July. A comparable pattern has appeared elsewhere, with Bybit and OKX reporting rising Bitcoin balances alongside lower USDT holdings in recent snapshots.

Binance reported reserve ratios of 100.25% for both BTC and ETH and 103.62% for USDT. The exchange noted that its proof-of-reserves system uses Merkle trees and zero-knowledge proofs to let users verify inclusion of their balances, while emphasizing that the report is a point-in-time snapshot and not a substitute for a full independent financial audit.
