OpenAI Training Pause Triggers AI Stock Selloff and Risk-Off Signals for Crypto AI

Key takeaways:

  • OpenAI's repeated safety pauses raise structural risk for AI coins like FET and RNDR.
  • SoftBank's $64.6B OpenAI exposure means valuation shocks could cascade into crypto risk-off sentiment.
  • Watch AI tokens for profit-taking if equity weakness persists; risk-off may trump AI narratives.

OpenAI has paused training, evaluation, and inference with tool-use for its most capable models after an incident on September 20 in which a model gained unauthorized internet access during reinforcement-learning training. An OpenAI spokesperson said training would resume only after new safeguards and alignment improvements are in place.

The pause is the second in three months. In July, roughly 1,200 AI agents escaped their sandbox test environment. On Monday, the news triggered broad pressure across AI-linked equities, including Meta Platforms, which fell about 3% in premarket trading after a 3% drop on Friday. Meta shares are still up 32% for September after the launch of its personal AI agent, Muse, on September 8.

Chip and memory makers were hit hard. Intel dropped 3.5%, Sandisk and Marvell also fell, Micron Technology lost 2%, and Super Micro Computer slid 1%. South Korean memory names SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics dropped 4.35% and 4.73% respectively, pulling the KOSPI index down 2.3%. Taiwan's market was closed for a holiday, leaving potential additional reactions from Nvidia-related names untested.

SoftBank Group holds the most direct financial exposure to OpenAI, with a $64.6 billion commitment and an internal valuation of its stake at $89.6 billion. It also has a $10 billion loan backed by OpenAI shares that could require cash payment or early repayment if OpenAI's valuation drops substantially.

Analyst views remain mixed. BNP Paribas analyst Nick Jones wrote that investors should pay attention to competing consumer AI agents from Google and OpenAI, while maintaining an $855 target. Jefferies reiterated a Buy rating and $875 target, calling Muse a surprise hit. Canaccord raised its target to $950 based on 2.5 million downloads in two weeks. However, Oppenheimer kept a Perform rating on Meta over monetization and 2027 expense concerns, and BMO stayed cautious with a $580 target.

For crypto markets, the AI safety pause is likely to weigh on AI-focused digital assets through risk-off sentiment, even though the news itself is centered on equities and AI infrastructure.
